the naturefactor approach

{ What we seek to protect reflects what we value }

~ Kofi Annan, UN secretary general, 1997–2006

The naturefactor approach is a 10-step process that suggests ways on how a graphic designers can tweak their traditional design process of problem solving in order to invite nature to the design table as a stakeholder.

While researching possible methods I realized that most importantly, we need to relearn how we treat nature. We should not dominate or use, but rather learn to respect and value nature. The main goal of this ten-step process is to introduce a paradigm shift in our attitude towards nature. Buckminster Fuller‘s universal principles and the Biomimicry group‘s life’s principles have given a platform to these steps.

Interconnectivity

Before we dive into the actual ten steps, I would like to address the interconnectivity of all things on this planet. Every living organism depends on, has an effect on, works with, eats on, and thrives with another living organism. To reduce waste and negative impact human systems have on the planet, it is crucial that we respect this principle and minimize the consequences our actions have on the entire system.

What we do as graphic designers causes consequences in many layers of our world. It is important that we realize our responsibility and make decisions that value nature and add to our system.

The graphic below shows the larger system in which we operate. The economy is  a component of society, which in turn is a part of the environment. Any action in any of these areas has an affect in the other systems.

For example, an American company decides to print something in China.  This decision has a negative effect on the local economy, affecting society because a job was sent overseas. Furthermore, China’s regulations for air pollution are not as stringent as they are in other areas of the world. Lastly, the prints have to be shipped long distance which have a negative effect on the environmental system.

Overall, the company might have saved money, but the larger system as a whole paid for that saving in more than one area.

President Obama is a strong believer of “insourcing“. He is working towards a beneficial system that rewards companies for not moving overseas. This step respects the system overall and does more than just keep local residents employed. Read more
